Edinburgh Dental is a referral centre for tooth replacement: more than 150 dentists across the UK send their own patients here for implant work rather than attempt it themselves. Referrals are taken for implants, complex full-arch cases, surgical dentistry, CBCT and OPT imaging and urgent pain relief; afterwards the patient goes back to their own dentist with a report.

Treatments and services

Implantology is the backbone: single implants and crowns, dentures clipped onto two to four fixtures, All-on-4 arches and full-arch rehabilitation on six to eight implants, with socket preservation, bone grafting and sinus lifts behind them. Everyday dentistry runs alongside — examinations, hygiene, white fillings, root canal treatment, extractions, crowns, bridges and dentures — with whitening, veneers, composite bonding and clear aligners in a choice of Invisalign or ClearCorrect. The philosophy is align, bleach, bond: move the teeth, lighten them, repair edges with composite, keep veneers and crowns for last. Emergency slots are held daily, registered patient or not.

Sedation and nervous patients

Intravenous sedation is a speciality here, not a sideline: Dr Ferhan Ahmed qualified in medicine as well as dentistry, the nurses hold sedation-support qualifications, and midazolam sedation is monitored throughout and reversible with flumazenil. For those who would rather avoid it there is buffered anaesthetic, topical numbing before any injection, breathing exercises, semi-upright chair positions and appointments booked purely to practise sitting in the chair.

The clinicians

Dr Ferhan Ahmed is founder, clinical director and implant surgeon, and teaches full-arch and pterygoid technique to visiting dentists here. Dr Duncan Weir is the second implant surgeon; surgical and sedation work goes to Dr Niall Bradley and Dr Kelsey Shortiss; Dr Aran Maxwell-Cox leads cosmetic dentistry and facial aesthetics; Dr Subhan Shaukat covers aligners and general care, with therapists Jack Rollinson and Tanya Sawhney. Pratibha Singh, a dentist herself, guides patients through implant planning before they meet the surgeon.

Who it suits

Adults living with gaps, failing bridgework or loose dentures who want something fixed in place. Patients told by their own dentist that the case is too complex. Anyone whose fear has kept them out of a surgery for years, or in sudden pain and registered nowhere.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral? No, patients book directly; dentists may also refer.

Will I leave with teeth the day implants are placed? Temporary teeth go in that day; the permanent ones follow after three to six months of healing.

I am terrified of needles. Topical numbing, distraction techniques and, if needed, sedation before any injection.
