An independent practice that chose to stay independent

Slateford Dental Care opened in 1989 as a single surgery and now runs seven surgeries over two floors. When the founder retired in 2024 it changed hands for the first time — not to a corporate group but to Christopher Logan, an associate of five years who wanted it kept private and independent. Several of its dentists have followed the same families from milk teeth into adulthood, and now treat their children.

Treatments and services

Routine care covers examinations, hygiene, fillings, crowns, bridges and root canal treatment; restorative and surgical work runs to implants, dentures, extractions, wisdom teeth, gum grafts and minor oral surgery; cosmetic work to Invisalign, veneers, composite bonding and whitening. Two lines sit outside the usual high-street range: facial aesthetics, and custom-made Sleepwell appliances that hold the lower jaw forward against snoring and sleep apnoea. Same-day slots are kept for emergencies.

Equipment and the hygiene route

A fully digital workflow — intraoral scanning and CBCT imaging — plans complex restorative and implant cases, and that scanner is open to colleagues: other Edinburgh dentists send CBCT and OPG referrals in. Hygiene is booked directly, with no need to see a dentist first, and cleaning uses EMS Airflow Guided Biofilm Therapy, staining the biofilm to make it visible, then lifting it away with warmed water, air and powder instead of scraping.

The clinicians

Christopher Logan, the principal, holds a postgraduate qualification in dental implantology and works on full-mouth rehabilitation, orthodontics and implant surgery. Stephen Harrison, a pharmacist before he was a dentist, and Dawn Loudon have each been here two decades; anxious patients are steered to them. Kerry Size adds facial aesthetics and Invisalign; Ibraheem Al-Affan and Vera Da Silva concentrate on composite bonding and minimally invasive restoration; Rami Al Laham on smile design and occlusion. Households wanting one practice for everyone, from a toddler’s first visit to a grandparent’s check-up. Wheelchair users and anyone who cannot manage stairs: ground-floor facilities are step-free. People who have put treatment off out of fear — the practice was shortlisted in the 2025 national private dentistry awards for treatment of anxious patients.
